What Is EBITDA and Why Does It Matter?
EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) is the most widely used metric for measuring core business profitability in mergers, acquisitions, private equity, and public company analysis. Unlike net income, EBITDA strips out the effects of capital structure (interest), tax jurisdiction (taxes), and accounting treatment of long-lived assets (depreciation and amortization). The result is a figure that reflects the operational earnings power of the business itself, independent of how it is financed or where it is incorporated.
Using an EBITDA calculator is the fastest way to convert your income statement into the metric that lenders, investors, and acquirers use to evaluate your business. How to Calculate EBITDA: The Formula Step by Step
The standard EBITDA formula starts from the bottom of the income statement and adds back non-cash and non-operating charges. The EBITDA formula calculator on this page uses the following approach:
- Start with Net Incomethe after-tax profit reported at the bottom of your P&L.
- Add Income Tax Expense reverses the effect of taxes, which vary by jurisdiction and tax strategy.
- Add Interest Expense reverses the effect of debt financing. The result at this step is EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes), also called operating income.
- Add Depreciation and Amortization (D&A) reverses the non-cash charges for the gradual write-down of physical assets (depreciation) and intangible assets like patents and customer lists (amortization). The result is EBITDA.

According to Investopedia's EBITDA definition, this metric is particularly useful when comparing companies that have made significant acquisitions, because acquisition-related amortization can substantially reduce net income without affecting cash generation.
It is worth noting that EBITDA is a non-GAAP metric. It does not appear directly on financial statements prepared under US GAAP. However, public companies are required to reconcile any non-GAAP metrics to the nearest GAAP equivalent in SEC filings. EV/EBITDA Valuation: How the EV EBITDA Calculator Works
The EV/EBITDA valuation multiple is the standard framework for pricing private company transactions, leveraged buyouts, and public company comparables. The calculator then produces:
- Enterprise Value (EV) = EBITDA × Multiple, the total value of the business including all debt and equity
- Equity Value = EV − Total Debt + Cash, what equity holders receive after debt is repaid
- Implied Share Price = Equity Value ÷ Shares Outstanding, the per-share value implied by the multiple
The sensitivity table shows valuations at 0.8x, 1.0x, and 1.2x your entered multiple, illustrating the range of outcomes based on how aggressively a buyer might price the business. In competitive sale processes, buyers often bid at the high end of the multiple range. In distressed situations or thin deal markets, transactions price at the low end. Typical EV/EBITDA multiples by sector: SaaS and high-growth technology companies often trade at 15 to 25x; established software businesses at 12 to 18x; healthcare services at 8 to 14x; manufacturing at 6 to 10x; retail at 5 to 8x. These ranges shift with interest rates and market conditions, when rates rise, multiples typically compress because buyers can earn more on alternative investments without taking operating risk.
EBITDA vs. Net Income: Choosing the Right Metric
EBITDA and net income answer different questions, and sophisticated analysts use both. Net income is the legally reported bottom line, the profit available to shareholders after every obligation is satisfied. EBITDA is an approximation of cash operating earnings that strips away financing, tax, and non-cash accounting decisions. Neither metric is universally superior; the right choice depends on what you are trying to understand.
Use the EBITDA calculator when you are benchmarking operating performance against competitors, evaluating how much debt a business can support, or preparing for a financing or sale process. One important limitation of EBITDA is that it ignores capital expenditure requirements. A manufacturing business with 15% EBITDA margins but heavy reinvestment needs may generate very little free cash flow despite healthy EBITDA. In those cases, analysts use EBITDA minus capex (sometimes called "EBITDA-capex" or "unlevered free cash flow") as a more conservative valuation anchor.
